Cloths: When Synthetic May be Better than Natural

Natural is a defining word that is almost always associated with something that is healthy. On the contrary, the word synthetic is often interpreted as anything made more for convenience's sake than for reasons of wellness. These connotations, of course, are not accurate when the subject is clothing. Because in many cases, synthetic cloths have an even greater value of desirability than natural ones. And, with very few exceptions, synthetic cloths do not present health risks.

Natural cloths, such as wool, cotton, and silk, are often chosen by people as materials for their apparel because of their distinct softness. However, it isn't at all surprising that a lot others prefer wearing clothings that are made of synthetic materials when we realize that such fabrics, in fact, do have very valuable attributes. For example, synthetic cloths are known to be non-permeable but can allow air to pass through nonetheless. They are also light and generally last longer than natural cloths do.

Synthetic cloths are made from chemicals or such raw materials as wood pulp (from which rayon is derived). Athletes are particularly partial to synthetic cloths when choosing sports suits because these fabrics absorb perspiration more effectively and they dry quickly. Synthetic cloths are likewise ideal for all-weather garments inasmuch as they can let air in freely (good for hot weather) and are excellent insulation for the body (during cold weather).

Because of the chemicals used in making synthetic cloths (formaldehyde, which is commonly used in the finishing processes for drapes, linens, and upholstery, is known to be a cancer-causing substance), are there any health concerns? Only a few, as a matter of fact. Modern technical processes guarantee that only a negligible amount of such chemicals, more especially formaldehyde, is released. Another minor concern is irritation of the skin which may be caused by the kind of coloring matter used in the finishes of certain garments. For people who are highly sensitive to all sorts of dyes, it is advised that such clothings be washed thoroughly before wearing them. In addition, they should also shun cloths that contain polyester, nylon underwear, and any "wrinkle-free" or "permanent-press" clothing article. Sleepwear for children are now made of synthetic materials that are intrinsically resistant to burning.

Synthetic cloths which are chiefly made of polyurethane are probably the best examples of why synthetic is a lot better than natural when it comes to clothing. They are very durable, lightweight, and do not deform easily. [Read the Original Article]
